The Loyal Lysosomes

Main Function of the Lysosomes!

Lysosomes are a very important part to the life of a cell. The lysosomes are known as the "stomach" of the cell because of the way they function. This membrane bound organelle is present in animal, eukaryotic cells. This organelle is a vesicle that contains enzymes that contribute to digesting food and breaking down a cell when it dies. The lysosomes also protect cells from any bacteria or virus's that may do any damage to the cell and can be used to break down any other worn out cell organelle. All of this is done using the enzymes that the lysosome contains. These enzymes are very powerful and require an acidic environment to function properly. Because the enzymes can digest most biological molecules it may seem like it would be harmful to the cell. But, first off, the enzymes are surrounded by a membrane that encloses them inside the lysosome and secondly, the enzymes would not be able to function properly outside of the lysosomes because of the low acidity level of the rest of the cell. Overall, the lysosome is a very important organelle to the cell and voting for the lysosome would be the best choice!

  1. I understand why you consider the lysosome to be the most important organelle in the cell, but I'd have to disagree. Breaking down food and old cells isn't really the most important function in a cell compared to other organelles. First of all, the lysosome is only available in animal cells. There's no diversity to your campaign. I'd recommend broadening your horizons when it comes to what cells you're in. Not to make this about me, but the Peroxisome is readily available in both plant and animal cells. We don't discriminate based on organism.

Secondly, all this talk about being the 'stomach' of the cell and about how important your job is really isn't as true as you'd like everyone to believe. Well you break down 'food', us peroxisomes are working hard to break down what really matters; harmful toxins. What I'm saying is that while the peroxisome is the 'police force' of the cell, the lysosome is a glorified garbage disposal system. You take food and old organelles and break them down. That's not really an irreplaceable job if you ask me.

The lysosome is basically a bigger version of a peroxisome, but with a less important job. At least us peroxisomes can be in both plant and animal cells. In my opinion, you are not the most significant organelle. - P. Peroxisome
