Nucleus Campaign

Vote Nucleus...

When you are thinking about who to vote for....remember ME, the nucleus! I am the most important organelle within the cell. I act as the brain of the cell, controlling movement, reproduction, structure, function, what comes in and out, growth and division of the cell. In addition, I hold all the cell’s DNA which contains genetic information about the cell used for activity. I’m like the brainiac maniac! I also contain the nucleolus where ribosomes (protein) are created. Its a no-brainer, I am definitely the most important organelle because without me, the rest of the cell would not survive.

The nucleus, always the center of everything.
...because the brain is a horrible thing to waste!

  1. Although I do agree that you are important for cell functioning, the mitochondria is more important. You state that you are the "brain" of the cell. In a similar way the mitochondria could represent the respiratory and digestive systems. If any organism had a brain and no essential other systems, it would be useless.

In addition, you state that the nucleus contains all of the DNA in a cell. This is not true at all. Mitochondria contain mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA, which come directly from the mother through asexual reproduction. Although the mitochondria still needs nuclear DNA to function, it likely could complete certain functions using its mtDNA.

Finally, the mitochondria is the power house of the cell. What use would a brain be with no energy? The mitochondria produces the energy for the cell through the process of cellular respiration. This is the process where oxygen and glucose are used to create carbon dioxide, water and usable energy for the organism. Although, the nucleus gives orders to the other organelles it would not be able to do so if it had no energy to function. Overall the mitochondria is essential for cell functioning and is the most important cell in the organelle.

  2. I disagree with you both! The chloroplast is obviously more important than both of you! You see the mitochondria produces usable energy through cellular respiration (which contains two vital products produced by the Chloroplast; oxygen and sugars). As you can see without me, the mitochondria would not be able to produce usable energy, which would result with no energy for the nucleus. Therefore its a "no-brainer". The chloroplast is clearly the most important organelle!

  3. Those are some valid points but although the mitochondria gives energy to the nucleus, the opposite argument is also true. What use is energy without a cell nucleus to guide and direct what that energy is being used for? A cell without a nucleus is like a river flowing in no direction; you need the nucleus to direct the flow and give things a purpose. The mitochondria, nor the chloroplast for this matter would know what to do or how to successfully complete their job as an organelle without the guidance of the nucleus telling them what to do. The nucleus communicates with all the organelles and the rest of the cell through the nuclear pores.
Also, as I already mentioned in my blog, the nucleus contains the DNA which contains genetic instructions for the cell's activities. The cell would not know if it was a muscle cell, bone cell, skin cell, plant cell or any other kind of cell without the DNA stored within the nucleus.
For the chloroplast, if that organelle was so important then why wouldn't it be in every cell and not just plant cells? Therefore, the nucleus must be the most important organelle.

    1. Note: Both the mitochondria and chloroplast do know how to complete their job as an organelle without the guidance of the nucleus. Remember the Endosymbiotic theory. We were both single celled organisms according to this theory millions of years ago! We don't need you! :)

  4. Dear the Brainy Nucleus,
Yes you are very important to the Cell, but without no Cell Wall your nothing! For example think of you as a quarter back controlling everything on the football field. Virus's and injury are on the opposing team trying to hit you (kill the cell) I am your offensive line and I will protect you until you get the job done. Sure you may get all the credit, but I mean the most to the cell (team). Every successful quarterback has an excellent offensive line just like every healthy nucleus has great Cell Wall. Stay classy nucleus. Vote the Cell Wall , the best a organelle can be.

  5. Its in your best interest to continue protecting me cell wall because I make every thing survive...including you. If you take me out of the equation, you along with all the other organelles with fail. If you would like stick with the football analogy, then lets take all the successful quarter backs in the past; they have all played behind mediocre offensive lines and still have got the job done and set records. With a mediocre cell wall, an amazing nucleus could still survive and keep the cell living.
In addition, you're only useful to me in the plant life. I don't need you for animal cells.

    1. Nucleus , by no means am I "mediocre" and every successful quarter back needs an excellent offensive line. Me only being in the plant cell has no effect on my importance. I did referred to you as the "Brainy" nucleus but I think you might have lost your knowledge. Don't you know that without plant cells their are no animal cells? My protection to you is vital for your survival. Vote the Cell Wall , the best a organelle can be.

    2. In addition to my reply, no successful quarterback operates under a mediocre offensive line. In fact without the offensive line ( Cell Wall), the quarterback would be left out to dry (nucleus) and no progress will be made. The Cell Wall definitely deserves the best organelle award and no Nucleus will stand a chance. Vote the Cell Wall, the best a organelle can be.
